Hi, I am Rachel. Owner, grower, main weeder and florist at Owl House Flowers. I am a gardener with a love of flowers and being creative. I have brought those two together and become an artisan British flower grower and florist.
Everything I use in my floristry I grow in my cutting garden in Bingley or I supplement with British flowers grown in Yorkshire, Cornwall and Lincolnshire to name a few.
I live in Bingley with my husband John and son Jack. I am a ‘Yorkshire Tea’ drinker, Strictly Come Dancing (the UK version) watcher, armchair birdwatcher, painter, curtain maker, keen but amateur photographer, pinterest addict, a dancer like nobodies watching and a great writer of lists.
I have always loved flowers and I have had many floristry books on my shelves but I was inspired to be a British flower grower/florist by Jen and Bek of Blooming Green back in 2011. They appeared on a TV programme called My Dream Farm with Monty Don and I instantly loved the idea.
I was then asked to do the funeral flowers for my husband’s grandfather. A man who loved gardening, hated music playing in public places, and thought women should rule the country. Who wanted to go to the crematorium in a wheelbarrow, and who said you should always have yellow in the garden to make everything pop. I picked from Grandad’s garden, his daughters and ours…..I just picked anything looking good (it was the end of July). I made 5 displays, beautiful scented with David Austin Roses, herbs, and I used his favourite clematis. The flowers were beautiful (if I do say so myself), I did him proud. Hubby was astounded…..’I didn’t think they would be so good’….charming heh!
Less than a year later I started Owl House Flowers.
I became a member of Flowers from the farm, a nationwide network of British flower growers, and started sowing seeds and clearing the garden, making specific cut flower beds. Since then I have got additional land, a private allotment where I can grow anything. So my garden remains a spring garden with lots of foliage, lilacs, and roses. The new plot will be for annuals, perennials and dahlias. 1/4 acre full of flowers. Gorgeous to look at and fabulous for the bees, if I haven’t cut everything for a wedding that is!
Owl House Flowers is part of the British Flowers movement which takes pride in offering something different. British seasonal flowers, flowers that you may not normally find in a traditional florist bouquet or in a supermarket ready made bouquet. Every bouquet will be unique in that they will change with the seasons. From terrific tulips in Spring, fragrant English roses and sweet smelling sweetpeas in summer, divine dahlias in Autumn and fabulous foliage in the winter.
Thank you for joining me and I hope we get to chat soon about your wedding flowers.
